Total Internal Reflection

We have already gone over some of the important aspects of total internal reflection. I'll show the plot we saw earlier to highlight the most important points. Here we see that the internally reflected waves pick up a phase shift that increases as the angle increases from θc to π/2.

Fresnel Phase Shifts ni greater than nt

Even though the transmitted waves Fresnel coefficients appear, from the last section, we see that they have no power in them. This was made evident in the plot

Fresnel Reflectance Transmittance ni greater than nt

Head over to the PhET on bending light. and click on "Prisms." After you load up the PhET, use one of the "objects" at the bottom, the laser, and the protractor to solve for the index of refraction for objects "Mystery A" and "Mystery B", respectively. Your PhET should look something like the following picture
